Fox "News" & Selective Editing

Should anyone ever make the claim that Fox News is actually news, much less "fair and balanced," simply direct them to this segment on The Daily Show.  Jon Stewart perfectly catches them in their lie and mocks them appropriately.  In this instance, the network edited a speech of President Obama in such a way as to make it appear that he was saying exactly the opposite of what he actually was saying. Sad, and unfortunately effective in the pursuit of their ultimate goal

Here is the original Sean Hannity clip from Fox. Of course, given the fact that it is Hannity, is anyone surprised?

Animal Photo Bombs

While I'm sure that we'll get to today's ruling on health care from the Supreme Court, let's first take a walk on the lighter side.  I'm always a fan of these photographs.

Begging the Question

A post on The Huffington Post provided both the definition of the phrase "begging the question," as well as how it is commonly misused.

"Greece as Victim"

Paul Krugman explained in yesterday's NY Times the origins of the crisis in Greece, its roots outside of that country, and misconceptions about the country itself.  It is very much worth the read.

Brown Bear Visit

We had a visitor to our backyard last night after work.  He (she?) did a number on our bird feeders and their mount.  We'll be taking in the feeders for now so as to not attract this attention again, however fun in the moment.  Hopefully, we can come up with a system to have bird feeders in a place where a bear cannot reach them.  The bear had a tracking collar around his neck.

The visit was fun for our newest family member, too.  Finnegan sat fascinated at the back door, just knowing that he could eat that bear if only we'd let him!  Our other cat, Honor, was no where to be seen.  She would have been much more interested in the "picinic" baskets that can always been found where bears roam.  :-)

An Officer & a DOMA

From David Taintor at TPM comes the story of the soldier who was booed by Republicans during their debate spree and who is now campaigning against the Defense of Marriage Act with his husband.

From the story:

Army Captain Stephen Hill, the gay soldier who was booed by a Republican presidential debate audience last fall, and his husband are campaigning to highlight the inequalities that the Defense of Marriage Act creates.

“It literally takes away rights from soldiers,” Hill told TPM in a phone interview Monday. For instance, if his husband, Josh Snyder, were killed while Hill was serving overseas, Snyder wouldn’t be legally recognized as a family member under DOMA. “For me not to be able to go home and bury him is crazy,” Hill said.

Video:

Good luck, Captain Hill, and thank you.

Linked-in Hacked

Linkedin, the professional networking social site, was hacked pretty hard in the past few days, with millions of user passwords stolen.  The site is strongly -- strongly! -- recommending that users immediately change their passwords.  If you use this same password for other sites -- and you shouldn't! -- you should change those passwords as well.  Remember, don't make your password a real word or made up of real words and do use capital letters, numbers, and symbols.

Obama, Spending, & Economic Growth

New data offer the best, conclusive proof that contrary to popular belief -- what is the press doing? -- spending has actually fallen under President Obama.  The economic slow-down and even contraction that has begun to take hold traces this spending drop.  Coincidence?  Not at all.

From the article at TPM:

The new numbers provide more grist for the debate, such as it is, over whether contractionary economic policies slow growth. Conservatives say government spending is the problem, not the solution. Keynesian economists, notably Nobel Prize-winner Paul Krugman, have argued that pulling back on government spending while economic output remains below its potential threatens the recovery.

“Gosh, I wonder why the economy is underperforming?” Krugman wrote of the data.

FYI, Krugman is correct.  Now, if only the press and the public would only wake up and smell the coffee.  More to the point, if only the all-too-fiscally-conservative president would do the same.
